It is hard to believe it has been six years since the DSCSA became law. Since it was enacted in 2013, MatchRX.com has met numerous times with the FDA, congressional offices, and supply chain stakeholders to make sure independent pharmacy is well represented when it comes to requirements, procedural changes, and compliance.     

The DSCSA is designed to be implemented over a 10 year timeline, with the majority of date milestones directed towards manufacturers, re-packagers, and wholesalers. The next dispenser milestone is November 2020, which mandates that dispensers can only purchase pharmaceutical products from wholesalers that are encoded with a unique product identifier displayed on the package. The identifier is currently being piloted by select manufacturers, re-packagers, and wholesalers in various test formats, and will include a serial number to help quickly identify suspect product. Once the identifier is standardized, MatchRX will add this field to the posting form. In-dated items purchased by your pharmacy prior to November 2020 will be grandfathered and allowed to be transferred as experienced today.  As always, we will do our very best to stay in front of any DSCSA issues that impact our member pharmacies.

As margins behind the counter continue to decline, independent pharmacies are looking to remedy their profit pains. And pharmacy retail experts are prescribing a simple front-end treatment: cross merchandising.

“Cross merchandising is a tactic that can increase sales, if pharmacies do it right and are consistent and committed to it,” said Tom Boyer, director of national accounts for Hamacher Resource Group (HRG), a firm that focuses on improving results across the retail supply chain.

Cross merchandising means positioning complementary items from different categories together to encourage add-on sales. Classic examples from grocery stores include ketchup and mustard next to hamburger buns and salsa next to tortilla chips. Researchers are testing a novel method to combat potential new flu pandemics and to treat influenza. They are targeting the receptors on cells that the virus uses to gain entry to the body.

In a report published in the Jan. 25, 2019, issue of Journal of Immunology, researchers at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine in the United Kingdom explained how they engineered a part of an antibody to target the viral proteins that allow flu to mutate and become deadly.

New drugs to combat influenza are needed because influenza outbreaks account for between 300,000 and 650,000 respiratory deaths globally each year, mostly in children and the elderly, says study author Richard Pleass, PhD, professor and chair of parasite immunology at the school, in a statement. Key House lawmakers have come to a bipartisan agreement to move forward long-stalled legislation aimed at lowering drug prices.

The agreement between House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Frank Pallone Jr. and Rep. Greg Walden (Ore.), the panel’s top Republican, will allow the bills, aimed at increasing competition from cheaper generic drugs, to advance from the committee on a bipartisan vote expected later on Wednesday.

Aides in both parties said Democrats verbally agreed to make changes to one of the most prominent measures, known as the Creates Act, which cracks down on tactics drug companies use to delay the introduction of cheaper generic drugs. (…read more)

Helpful Hints

Tip 1: Postings. Postings. Postings.

Sellers, don’t loose money by allowing drugs to expire on your shelf. Run a utilization report from your pharmacy software system to help identify excess inventory and overstock. Many of our members run this report on a monthly/quarterly basis, and regularly post items for sale to MatchRX. Items that are priced correctly will typically sell within a few business days, turning stale inventory into cash. Use the complementary MatchRX stickers to clearly identify items that are posted to the marketplace. Click here to request more stickers.

Tip 2: Buyers, check your orders once delivered. Why it’s important.

Once a Buyer receives an order, verify all items are received and in good condition. Buyers have two (2) business days to confirm the receipt of an order and notify MatchRX of any discrepancies. If the order is not confirmed by the buyer, MatchRX will automatically confirm the order on the third business day and mark the order as closed, releasing a full credit to the Seller.

Here are some tips:

  1. Designate a member of your team to check and verify all MatchRX orders within two (2) business days of receipt (including the current business day).
  2. When an item is delivered, check the shipping label to verify the sender is from MatchRX.
  3. Immediately open any packages marked as refrigerated / frozen.
  4. Open the box and verify items with the signed packing checklist included in the box.
  5. Problems, call our stellar customer service team at 877-590-0808.
