From the CEO

The FDA recently published a report on the root causes and potential solutions of drug shortages in the supply chain and ultimate impact on patient access to medications and treatment regimens. The report can be viewed here.

Unfortunately, as the report details, drug shortages have continued to rise since 2011 and are lasting longer than before. The root cause of a shortage is complicated and involves both private and public sector decision making related to price, manufacturing practices, logistics, and regulatory challenges. Identifying and correcting each cause entails a great deal of industry effort, political effort, and collaboration throughout the supply chain. It is safe to assume drug shortages are something that we will all continue to experience.

Independent pharmacies are hit particularly hard with drug shortages due to limited purchasing resources. If your primary and secondary wholesaler is out of stock, what do you do? Nothing is worse than having to turn away a patient because you cannot source the medication. Luckily, being a member of MatchRX, you have a solution to drug shortages at your fingertips.  As a seller, you can help other independents by posting your overstock and partial packs for sale to the marketplace.  As a buyer, you can quickly locate items in short supply from over 6,500 independents at a great price. It is a win-win-win, with the patient being the biggest winner of all.

I encourage you to make MatchRX a part of your daily pharmacy operations. Check your shelves for items you no longer need and post them for sale. Shop the marketplace on a regular basis. Doing so will not only save your pharmacy money, it will help your patient, and it will help a fellow independent and their patient. Lets work together to minimize the impact of drug shortages.

Thank you for your continued membership.

John Kello, CEO

Independent pharmacies, especially those located in urban areas, are at a greater risk for closure, a new study finds.

Published in JAMA Internal Medicine, the analysis determined that 1 in 8 pharmacies closed from 2009 to 2015, even though the overall number of pharmacies increased during this time. Independent pharmacies in both rural and urban areas were found to be 3 times more likely to close than chain pharmacies.

To determine the reason for these closures, the researchers sought to examine attributing pharmacy, community, and market factors. (…read more)

NCPDP will no longer apply for an NPI number on behalf of a pharmacy. This means that pharmacies needing an NCPDP ID in the future will need to apply for their own NPI number prior to filling out the NCPDP application. Additionally, NCPDP will no longer update pharmacies’ NPI profiles on behalf of the pharmacy. Pharmacies that need to update their NPI profiles must do so by logging into the NPPES website. If you have any questions about your NPI profile or need login information to access your NPI profile, you can visit the NPPES website or contact the NPPES customer service line at 1-800-465-3203 and ask for an NPI Specialist. Perhaps it goes without saying, but working in a pharmacy is stressful. The overhead noise that often present in pharmacies, the fluorescent lights, ill patients or ill-tempered colleagues can make for a very stressful work environment.

Unlike other stressful work environments, though, pharmacists are responsible for the lives of the people they serve. Stress at work can affect their emotional and mental clarity, cognitive alertness, and can make it difficult to concentrate—all of which increase the likelihood of accidents. A minor alteration in dosage or accidentally administering the wrong medication can truly mean life or death for a patient. (…read more)

Helpful Hints

Tip 1: Postings. Postings. Postings.

Sellers – how many scripts do you have to fill to recover the money lost when a drug expires on your shelf? Expired drugs equate to lost profits. Post your overstock, short dated, and odd package sizes to MatchRX and sell them to a fellow independent that needs it to fill a script. Posting is fast and easy.

Here are a few tips to help manage your postings:

  • Use the complimentary MatchRX stickers to track what you’ve posted. Order more here.
  • Assign a tech to help track all your sales made in the marketplace.
  • Post multiple items at a time. When a Buyer adds one of your items to the cart, the marketplace will automatically display the rest of your open postings to help the buyer identify additional items and save on shipping.

Tip 2: Contacts, emails, and phone numbers.

Reviewing your account information is simple, quick, and important. Next time you login, verify your list of authorized contacts. Review and update contact names, email addresses, notification preferences, and cell phone numbers. Don’t hesitate to add your accountant or any other person that is authorized to inquire about your account. MatchRX customer service agents will only work with authorized individuals.
